The short version
Browsing this site collects nothing beyond standard hosting logs and page-visit counts from Cloudflare Web Analytics, which uses no cookies and doesn't follow you to other sites. There's no account to make. We collect only two things, and a parent or guardian sends us both: an on-air shoutout request, and, if you ask to join, an email address for our email list. Both are described below.
What this site is
This site (boxscorebrains.com) publishes the Box Score Brains podcast: episode information, a trailer, and links to subscribe. It also serves the show's RSS feed at feeds.boxscorebrains.com.
Shoutouts on the show
"Jumbotron" is our on-air shoutout segment -- a kid's first name read out on the show, like the big screen at the ballpark. A parent or guardian sends us the request themselves -- our Jumbotron page has the current way to do that.
What we use: a kid's first name (never a last name), their city and state, and a short message -- usually the kid's answer to a question we asked on the episode, like their favorite team, who they're playing for this season, or their favorite player. That's what gets read on air. We don't ask for a last name, street address, birthdate, phone number, email address for the child, or a photo -- and we won't use them if they're sent anyway. If a message includes more than we asked for, we use only the first name, the city and state, and the answer.
Who may ask: parents and guardians only. We don't put a shoutout on the show unless a parent or guardian asked for it. If a message looks like it came from a child, we don't put it on the show -- we reply asking for a parent or guardian to write to us instead.
What we keep: the request itself, wherever it reached us -- an email thread or a Patreon conversation (a form on this site, if there is one, sends your request to us as an email and keeps no copy of its own) -- along with the parent or guardian address we'd reply to. We don't add it to an analytics tool, or to any list unless you ask to join our email list (below), and we don't share it with anyone outside Box Score Brains. If you'd like us to delete a message you sent, or take a shoutout out of a future episode, email privacy@boxscorebrains.com and we'll do it. Episodes already aired will come out of the feed going forward, but we can't reach copies people have already downloaded -- so tell us before it airs if you're unsure.
If you contact us through Patreon, Patreon holds that message under their own privacy policy, not ours. If you send a request through a form on this site, that form is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, a bot check, under Cloudflare's privacy policy, and nothing is used on air until a parent or guardian confirms by email.
Our email list
We only add you to our email list if you ask -- by using the signup form or emailing us from our Sports page, or by saying yes in a shoutout request. We never add an address just because you wrote to us. The signup form is protected by Cloudflare Turnstile, the same bot check described above, and emails your address and choices to our inbox. We keep your email address and what you asked to hear about: a new sport, like football or basketball, and occasional news from the show. We email you about those things and nothing else, and we don't share or sell the list. The list is for grown-ups; we don't add a child's email address to it.
Every email we send to the list has a link to unsubscribe, from one topic or from all of them. When we email the list, we send through an email delivery service that holds the list for us and uses it only to deliver our email. We keep your address until you unsubscribe or ask us to delete it, and we delete the list if the show stops. If you joined in a shoutout request, we copy your address onto the list, so it stays there after that shoutout message is deleted. To come off the list at any time, use the unsubscribe link or email privacy@boxscorebrains.com.
How long we keep it
We keep a shoutout message until the shoutout has aired, and delete it within 90 days after that. If we decide not to use a message, we delete it within 90 days of receiving it. We don't keep a running list of kids who've been mentioned on the show once the message is gone.
Standard hosting logs are handled by Cloudflare on their own schedule, not ours -- we don't pull them into anything of our own or keep copies.
Security
We collect very little: no last names, no account system, no payment details. What we do hold -- shoutout messages, the address we'd reply to, and our email list -- lives in our email account (and, for the list, with our email delivery service), each protected by two-factor authentication and reachable only by the people who run the show.
Parents: seeing or deleting what we have
If you've sent us a shoutout request about your child, or joined our email list, you can ask us at any time to show you what we still have, delete it, or stop using it -- and you can refuse any further use without giving a reason. Email privacy@boxscorebrains.com from the address you originally wrote from, and we'll confirm when it's done.
Hosting and technical logs
This site and its podcast feed are hosted on Cloudflare. Like virtually any website, Cloudflare processes standard technical information as part of delivering pages and the feed -- things like IP address, browser type, and request timing -- for basic operation, performance, and security (for example, blocking abusive traffic). We don't use this data for advertising, and we don't combine it with anything else we hold about you.
Podcast apps
If you subscribe to Box Score Brains through a podcast app (Overcast, Pocket Casts, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or any other app), that app's own privacy policy governs whatever data it collects about your listening. We don't receive listener-identifying information back from podcast apps.
Children's privacy
Box Score Brains is made to be enjoyed by kids and families together. The only information we ever hold about a child is what a parent or guardian chooses to send us for a shoutout, described above, and we deliberately keep that to a first name, a city, and a short answer to a question from the show. We don't knowingly accept information about a child from anyone other than their parent or guardian. If you believe we have something about your child you didn't send us, email privacy@boxscorebrains.com and we'll delete it.
Links to other sites
This site links out to Patreon, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and a few others. Those are other companies' services with their own privacy policies, and what they collect is up to them, not us.
Changes to this policy
We'll update this page as the site changes, and we'll change the "Last updated" date above whenever we do.
